Afforestation works kicked off as part of the “Riyadh Green” Project, one of Riyadh’s Four Megaprojects launched by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, on 19 March 2019. Proposed by HRH Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, Vice President of the Council of Ministers, and Chairman of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, the project will be a milestone that contributes to fulfilling a key goal of the Saudi Vision 2030 to promote Riyadh’s position among the world’s top 100 most livable cities.
The first stage includes planting nearly 31,000 trees along 144 km of main roads in the city of Riyadh, including King Salman Road, King Khalid Road, King Fahd Road, Airport Road, Makkah Road, North Ring Road, and Eastern Ring Road. Also, 100,00 shrubs will be planted, bringing the total green areas along the city roads around 1.4 million square meters. Irrigation networks will be developed to supply up to 3000 m3 of recycled water per day for Green Riyadh works.
Only native shade plant species compatible with Riyadh’s environment are used for the project, including the local Sidr (Ziziphus), the Najdi Talh (Farnesiana) and the Gulf Ghaf (Mesquite).
The Riyadh Green project also includes:
Green Riyadh will help improve air quality and reduce average ambient temperature, in addition to increasing the city’s per capita green space and reducing energy consumption.
