The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh revealed that it has developed a comprehensive strategy for waste management in the city, according to the best international environmental sustainability standards.
In a paper titled, “Waste Strategy in the City of Riyadh” presented in the Gulf Forum for Solid Waste Management and Recycling, organized by Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs (13-14 April, 2016), Engr. Abdulaziz Al-Muqbil, from ADA’s Environmental Planning and Public Utilities Department, explained that ADA’s waste management strategy seeks to achieve sustainable management of wastes through a unified reference protocol, and integrated waste management and recycling programs, in addition to a unified database to be used in preparation of indicators and determination of costs.
He explained that the strategy stressed the importance of defining responsibilities of the concerned bodies and enforcing the regulations that ensure benefitting from the wastes, which should be treated as raw resources.
“The strategy, supports AlRiyadh Municipality’s initiative (Riyadh Without Waste Containers) through the distribution of containers for sorting wastes at the origin, and a system for bulky waste collection inside special centers with environmentally sustainable engineering designs,” he added.
