The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh has commenced the project of “Traffic Signals Management and Control System in Riyadh”, in cooperation with Riyadh Traffic Department. The system directly processes road traffic information, and manages traffic signals across the city.
TransSuite system was chosen to be deployed in the city of Riyadh for the following reasons:
The system manages and synchronizes the metropolitan traffic signals in over 2000 intersections per second. It also controls the traffic flow of all intersections across the city, in addition to following and responding to the daily traffic events, accidents, etc.
The system manages traffic flow during crises in the city and gives priority to emergency vehicles. It also has the ability to monitor all intersections in the city with cameras to ensure rapid response to the different emergency cases.
The system can read license plates and identify the vehicles reported/wanted by the security authorities through issuing an alert and putting the vehicle under surveillance immediately upon entering the range of the 1400 cameras covering Riyadh entrances, ring roads, squares, axes, intersections and main roundabouts.
The system automatically detects the vehicles moving at high speed, and predicts those about to violate the red light. Accordingly, the system transforms all intersection signals into red until the offending vehicle passes. The system also automatically detects the incidents taking place in the zone of coverage such as fires, floods, or crowds.
The project of “Traffic Signals Management and Control System in Riyadh” includes deployment of 350 traffic signals controllers at the city’s key intersections to control the timing of traffic signals, and ensure overall synchronization. Those controllers make variable timings depending on traffic density.
The system includes 175 cameras to read license plates, and they would be deployed along the main roads and roundabouts to serve both traffic and security purposes in the city.
The system will be operated from the Traffic Management Room at Riyadh Traffic Department, around the clock. The 18-member team will comprise specialists in the areas of transport and traffic engineering, traffic safety engineering, programming, and maintenance. Those specialists have been trained to operate the system in various cities around the world.
The High Commission carries out this project in cooperation with the Riyadh Traffic Department, as part of the execution plan of «Traffic Safety Strategy in City of Riyadh», an output of the Metropolitan Development Strategy for the Arriyadh Region (MEDSTAR).
Works of the execution plan are supervised and followed up on by “The High Committee for Traffic Safety” under the chairmanship of HRH President of the High Commission, and membership of ten concerned government agencies.
